First shots with the Samyang 85mm f1.4 AS IF UMC on Fujifilm X-PRO3

The Samyang 85mm f1.4 AS IF UMC is my first Korean lens I ever used and tested. The first impression is excellent. A lens with a great haptic, clicked aperture ring (much louder than the one of the new 7Artisans 50mm f1.2 and I am not sure what I like more) and a well damped run of the focus ring. Like the Chinese Lenses I am used to test also the Samyang 85mm f1.4 AS IF UMC is made of full metal. Due to the focal length of 85mm (128mm Full Frame) the lens is long 101mm without the long polymer lens hood. The Fujifilm X-PRO3 has a weight of 497g, the Samyang 85mm f1.4 AS IF UMC lens 610g. One would expect that this is a mismatch. Too heavy lens for that body. Surprisingly this is in the real haptic not the case. The reason for this positive haptic might be that the X-PRO3s 497g are limited on a width of only 46.1mm and the lens 610g on 101mm. Long speech short, the lens – camera balance is good. It is fun to shoot with this setup. Haptic and balance are nearly perfect.

To start my review sessions, I have been shooting in the nature including a little snowstorm, ice on the road and winter sun over some trees. I also mixed color (Velvia) images and B&W (Acros +R). I like the results. The sharpness, contrast and color rendering looks very good. All details will soon be seen when I am testing the Samyang 85mm f1.4 AS IF UMC on my 3D Test Chart.
