Lens hood or not on the 7Artisans AF 27mm f2.8, that is to me the question.

If you have been a “loyal” reader of my little photo blog, you will know that I am a fan of using lens hoods to improve the contrast and resolution of many lenses in daily photographical situations.

Yes I know, that todays lens coatings are stunning, one of the reasons why often using a filter on a modern lens will reduce even the image quality, still with some tests I confirmed the truth of a very positive effect on most lenses using a lens hood.

As described in my quick first review of the 7Artisans AF 27mm f2.8, the lens front is deep back into the housing creating a kind of natural lens hood. Is this together with the modern multi-layer coating of 7Artisans enough straylight protection?

To find the answer, I ordered a vented metal lens hood on Amazon size 39mm for the lens thread of the 7Artisans AF 27mm f2.8.

My favorite are vented metal lenses. They are stiff and lens protective but also smaller than most tulip shaped lens hoods. Additional they are looking very cool to me.

To perform this test, I have chosen a light situation where I have been targeting Trees and sky / clouds just one hand size below the bright sun on the sky above. Asking for blur and/or straylight artifacts in the image.

Result of this Test on the image: There is no need for the lens hood on the 7Artisans 27mm f2.8 lens to me, no different in image quality. “Internal lens hood” and coating are just giving a great image. Save some money by not buying an additional lens hood.
